Smart City Expo World Congress 2024

Once again we have attended the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024, in Barcelona. And today I write about the main initiatives that have marked trends in the field of smart cities. Before I say that the city must be understood as an entity, capable of generating its own software that integrates technologies, data, devices and creation of teams of experts. It is our living environment and we are the ones who know it best. The solutions, in my view, involve the hybridization of different alternatives.

Briefly, I comment:

  1. Digital Transformation and Sustainability

Sustainability remains a central theme, with a focus on how cities can integrate digital technologies to address environmental challenges. The adoption of renewable energy, reduction of carbon footprint and intelligent management of resources such as water and energy have become priorities.

  1. Intelligent Mobility

Sustainable urban mobility was another key point at the fair. Progress was reported on the electrification of public transport and autonomous vehicle fleets. The interconnection between different mobility solutions is already a priority for cities and traffic reduction.

The entry of the drone in the city, in deliveries or transport of goods, is already a reality.

  1. 5G Technology and Connectivity

Integrating IoT, 5G and big data sensors to improve urban management offers opportunities for designing products and systems that optimize resource management and citizen interaction.

  1. Artificial Intelligence and Big Data

It is already a reality and we must accelerate its development and proper management. Management of climate events has become more relevant due to the harsh circumstances we all know.

  1. Urban Innovation Ecosystems

Creation of innovation ecosystems involving private companies, governments and citizens. These partnerships are designed to facilitate the development of innovative urban solutions tailored to local circumstances, addressing global challenges such as climate change and urban population growth.

  1. Solutions for Waste Management

New proposals and solutions applying AI. The analysis, in my view, also involves reviewing the business model.

In summary, the Smart City Expo 2024 highlighted a holistic approach where technology, sustainability and citizens’ quality of life are combined to create more efficient, accessible and environmentally friendly urban solutions.

I have to say that the number of companies and countries represented is already in line with pre-pandemic levels and, positively striking, the devices and solutions presented show a high level of maturity on the part of the companies.
